Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. Freedom requires self-control. If the majority of people don’t control themselves, the state will have to control them. In the US until the 1960’s, parents and schools concentrated on character education. The importance of fathers and religion as conveyors of self-control. You can’t make society better without making its people better. Social issues are more important than character education. Global warming, economic inequality, white privilege, campus rape culture. People focusing on fixing America and doing nothing to fix their own character. Seek society stability. The desire for individual freedom is driven by greed. We all do better when we all do better. For good to prevail a society must be at peace and in harmony. For people to serve each other, we need government to make sure that the needs of the less fortunate are taken care of, the environment is cared for, and animals are treated humanely. Government should reflect love, good will, honesty, sincerity, and empathy. Selfishness will cause human relationships (society) to deteriorate into chaos and conflict. Selfishness and ego will exploit, claiming it’s for a good cause. •
