Star Song
You are on Earth and planning a trip to the stars. In talking with the travel agent, you learn that any star you want to go to is a LONG distance away. In fact, instead of talking miles, you need to talk in terms of light years. A light year is the distance light travels in one year. That's about 5.88 TRILLION miles or 9.5 trillion km.
  • Alpha Centauri, the nearest star, is 4.4 light years from Earth.
  • In Star Song, the Chosen travel 41 light years to Cancri A.
  • The Hercules Globular Cluster is 25,000 light years away.
  • The Andromeda Galaxy is the closest galaxy to our Milky Way. It's 2.5 MILLION light years from us.
The agent gives you a list of possible destinations. Shocked at the distances and time it will take, you groan and start to leave.

"Hold on," calls the agent. "You need to consider Einstein's relativity." He gives you an app to show how you can still take the trip to anywhere in the Universe that you want. This is it!

In the "Plan your trip" row, enter the distance in light years to your destination and the speed you will travel. Then press Trip Time to see the trip from your persepctive as you travel.

SPEED: Speed must be entered as a decimal fraction of the speed of light "c". For example, if you are traveling half the speed of light, enter .5.  If you are traveling .9 the speed of light enter .9. You can go as fast as you want. For example you might enter .9999999 or even more, up to 15 decimal places. Or you might enter .1 if you are traveling relatively slow.

When you press the Trip Time button, the Time as seen from Earth will show on your "Plan your trip" row while the "Your distance and time" row will display what you experience on your trip.
Speed (c) Distance (LY) Time (Years)
Plan your trip c   LY Time as seen on Earth
Your distance and time as seen on your ship LY
